Why your breaker keeps tripping, and what actually fixes it

The first thing worth saying is that a breaker which trips is working. It is a deliberate weak point, sized so that it gives up before the cable behind the wall gets hot enough to matter. People often describe a tripping breaker as a faulty breaker, and occasionally it is, but far more often it is a perfectly good breaker reporting something true about the circuit it protects.

What it is reporting falls into roughly three categories, and they have very different fixes. Telling them apart at home is easier than most people expect, and it makes the conversation with an electrician much shorter.

One: the circuit is simply carrying too much

This is the common one, especially in the older housing around Oakland and Macomb County. The circuit was laid out for a room that had a lamp and a television in it, and now that room has a space heater, a treadmill, a computer and a window unit. Nothing is broken. The circuit is just being asked for more than it was built to give.

The tell is repeatability. An overload trips when the same combination of things is running, and it behaves itself when they are not. If you can make it happen on purpose by switching the kettle on while the microwave runs, you have an overload rather than a fault.

The fix is not a bigger breaker. Fitting a larger breaker to the same cable removes the protection without removing the load, which is the one genuinely dangerous response to this problem. The fix is either fewer things on that circuit, or a new circuit to carry some of them.

Two: a short or a ground fault somewhere on the run

A short trips instantly and hard, usually the moment you reset it or the moment a particular switch is used. It does not care how much is plugged in. That is the distinguishing feature: an overload needs load to trip, a short does not.

Shorts come from damaged insulation, a nail or screw that found a cable during some other job years ago, water getting into an outdoor fitting or a junction box, or a failed appliance pulling the circuit down with it. The last of those is worth ruling out first, because it is free to test. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, and add things back one at a time. If it holds until a specific appliance goes in, the appliance is the problem, not the wiring.

If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring and it needs tracing. That is genuinely an electrician's job, because finding it means isolating sections of the run rather than guessing at the most convenient one.

Three: the panel itself has run out of room

This is the one homeowners rarely suspect, and it is often what is really going on. A panel that was correct when it was installed has since absorbed a kitchen remodel, a finished basement, an air conditioner and a car charger. Every one of those was added by squeezing something in, and now several circuits are doing more than their share.

When that is the situation, adding one more breaker is a postponement rather than a repair. You get a few quiet months and then the same symptom moves to a different circuit. If your panel has no spare positions, has tandem breakers stacked in to create positions, or is warm to the touch, the honest answer is usually the service rather than another circuit.

What not to do in the meantime

  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips straight back. If it will not hold, something on that circuit is asking it not to.
  • Do not fit a larger breaker to an existing cable. That removes the protection and leaves the cause in place.
  • Do not ignore a breaker that trips with nothing plugged in. That is fixed wiring, and it will not improve on its own.
  • Do note what was running when it went. That single detail often identifies the problem before anyone opens anything.

When to call somebody

Call when it trips with nothing plugged in, when it will not reset at all, when you can smell anything warm near the panel or an outlet, or when the same circuit has gone more than a couple of times in a month. Those are all the fixed wiring or the service, and none of them gets better by being watched.
