Lighting a parking lot so it is actually safe

For a good part of the Michigan year, a fair number of your staff and customers arrive or leave in the dark. That makes the lot part of the premises rather than something outside it, and it is usually the part that gets the least attention until something happens on it.

The useful way to think about lot lighting is not how many fixtures there are. It is where the dark parts are.

Coverage, not fixture count

A lot can have plenty of lights and still be badly lit, because the pools of light do not meet. What people actually experience is the contrast: a bright patch under each pole and genuine darkness between them is harder to see in than a lower, even level across the whole surface. Eyes adjust to the bright part and then cannot see into the gaps.

Walk the lot after dark, which almost nobody does, and the problems identify themselves. The gaps between poles, the corners, the far row, the edge where the surface meets landscaping, and the route people take from the door to their car are all easy to see once you are standing in them.

Light the places people actually use

  • The entrance from the road, so the site reads as open and occupied from outside.
  • The path from the door to the parking, which is the route everybody takes and often the one lit by accident.
  • Anywhere someone stands still: a cash machine, a collection point, a smoking area, a bin store.
  • Loading areas, where vehicles and people share ground and the vehicle is reversing.
  • The boundary, which is where a dark lot stops being a lighting problem and starts being a security one.

Glare and spill are part of the job

A fixture that puts light where it is not wanted causes two separate problems. Glare into a driver's eyes as they turn in makes the lot harder to see, not easier. Spill into neighboring property or a residential window creates a complaint that eventually costs you the installation you just paid for.

Aiming and shielding are what separate a lot that is bright from a lot that is well lit, and they cost nothing extra if they are considered when the fixtures go up.

What usually fails, and what it looks like

When one pole goes dark, it is normally the fixture or its control. When a group of poles goes dark together, or the same run keeps failing, the problem is more likely to be in the underground feed rather than in anything you can see from the ground.

That distinction is worth making before anyone goes up a ladder, because replacing three perfectly good fixtures on a failing run is a common and avoidable expense. Photocells and contactors are also worth ruling out early: a lot that stays on all day, or comes on late, is usually a control problem rather than a wiring one.

The running cost is mostly decided on the day it goes in

Lot lighting runs for a lot of hours a year, so small differences in how it is specified compound quickly. Two things dominate. The first is control: a lot that switches on the actual light level rather than a timer that drifts with the seasons is not running for hours it does not need to. The second is access.

Access is the one people forget. A fixture that needs a lift to reach costs a lift every time it is touched. When poles and fittings are chosen with the eventual maintenance visit in mind, a failed fixture is a routine call rather than a scheduled operation with equipment hire attached. That decision is made once, at installation, and then paid for repeatedly either way.

Doing it while the site keeps trading

Most lot work can be staged so the disruptive parts happen when you are closed. What that needs is an early, straight conversation about which sections have to be out of use and for how long, so the work fits around your hours instead of across them.
